How to Make Shepherdess’ Pie

Step 1: Prepare the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray a 9 x 11-inch (23 x 28 cm) baking dish with vegetable oil and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Roux

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour, stirring constantly to create a roux. Cook the roux for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 3: Create the Sauce

Slowly pour in the chicken broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens into a smooth sauce. Season with salt and pepper, adjusting the spice level to your liking.

Step 4: Combine the Filling

Add the thawed mixed vegetables and cubed chicken to the skillet. Stir well to evenly coat everything in the sauce.

Step 5: Assemble the Dish

Transfer the chicken and vegetable mixture to the prepared baking dish. Drop spoonfuls of mashed potatoes over the filling and smooth them out to create an even layer. Sprinkle the top with paprika for color and flavor.

Step 6: Bake to Perfection

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30–45 minutes, or until the pie is hot and bubbly with a golden top.
